IG (prisons) order probe into Tejashwi-Lalu meet
TNN | Feb 20, 2019, 03:34 ISTRanchi: Inspector general of police (prisons) Birendra Bhushan on Tuesday directed the superintendent of Birsa Munda central jail to submit a report on whether Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of opposition in Bihar assembly, had taken requisite permissions to meet his father and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad at Rims last Saturday. Tejashwi met Lalu in the afternoon and stayed with him till evening.
However, some officials say that Tejashwi did not secure proper permission as per the jail manual. This has prompted the authorities to order a probe. Talking to TOI, Bhushan said, “Preliminary inquiry indicates that Tejashwi did not secure a written approval of the jail superintendent for meeting Lalu.
“People who want to meet Lalu submit their application at Rims, which is then sent to the superintendent through WhatsApp. The superintendent approves the application on WhatsApp to avoid delays. However, the jail superintendent said he did not receive any application from Tejashwi this time. I have asked the superintendent to submit a report on the issue latest by Wednesday,” he added.
Jail IG said that depending on the report, they would then recommend action against the erring policeman who allowed Tejashwi to meet Lalu. “A security lapse could happen if people meet Lalu this way,” the IG said.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Lalu’s daughter Hema and her husband Vineet Yadav met him at Rims. Security personnel informed that the couple had taken special permission from the jail superintendent for the meeting.
Lalu, who has been convicted in fodder scam cases, is currently undergoing treatment at Rims.
