Five persons arrested in the case so far

The prime accused in the murder of Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas was arrested by the West Bengal Police on Monday.

Abhijeet Pundari was missing since February 9, the day the MLA was shot dead. He was apprehended from Radhamohanpur Railway Station in Paschim Medinipur district.

With his arrest the number of persons apprehended in the case has gone up to five. The police had nabbed Sujit Mondal and Kartik Mondal on the night of the incident, while Kalipada Mondal and Nirmal Ghosh were arrested a few days later from Nadia district.

Biswas, MLA from Krishnaganj constituency, was killed in full public view at a Saraswati Puja event in Fulbari area on February 9. He was descending from the stage when he was shot from point-blank range. A number of senior TMC leaders, including newly inducted Minister Ratna Ghosh, were present at the event when the incident happened.

BJP leader Mukul Roy was among those named in the FIR in connection with the murder. The Calcutta High Court had on February 13 directed the State police to not arrest Mr. Roy till March 7.
