Mumbai: Power supply to Boisar-Dahanu Western Railway section was cut-off when a 23-year-old youth tried to end his life by touching the overhead wire (OHE) on Monday. Trains to Dahanu got late by an hour, causing inconvenience to the commuters during morning peak hours.
Mohammad Tamanna Sheikh reached Boisar station at 9.05am and went to the footover bridge, from where he could reach the OHE. “The accused was disturbed due to a family feud, which forced him to take the extreme step,” said Inspector Vasant Rai, Railway Police Force, Dahanu Road.
Rai added suddenly a passenger came running to inform them about Sheikh and his action. “Immediately, power supply to the OHE was cut-off for 50 minutes, to avert any accident. The government railway police and fire brigade officials tried to dissuade Sheikh from suicide,” he said.
The accused has been booked under the Railway Act, section 145 (creating nuisance in railway premises), section 147 (trespassing), section 174 (obstructing running of the train) and section 156 (travelling on a roof, step or engine of a train). Boisar Police also booked him under relevant sections of the IPC, such as section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace.)
