Lady Gaga and Christian Carino quickly became serious after they became an item in early 2017, but friends were skeptical about the longevity of their romance from the start.

“Their friends knew they weren’t going to work out in the long run,” says a source close to the CAA agent. “It always seemed Christian was more into the relationship than Gaga was.”

After Gaga, 32, attended the Grammys solo and without her engagement ring on Feb. 10, rumors flew that the engaged couple had called it quits. The entertainer’s rep confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE on Tuesday they had split.

“It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end. There’s no long dramatic story,” another insider previously told PEOPLE, adding that the pair split “a bit ago.”

Gaga previously brought Carino as her date to other events this awards season, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes, where she has been supporting her film A Star Is Born.

At Elle‘s 25th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles last October, Gaga revealed her engagement to Carino by thanking “my fiancé Christian” during her speech.

Gaga was previously engaged to longtime boyfriend Taylor Kinney, 37, before news of the pair’s split broke in July 2016. Meanwhile, Carino was previously linked to The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohan, 37; some of the high-powered agent’s clients include A-listers Justin BieberAmber HeardChristina AguileraSimon CowellMiley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez.

Gaga’s split with Kinney came at another high-profile moment in the artist’s career.

From the first scene of her Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, it’s clear that Gaga’s relationship with the Chicago Fire star is on the rocks. “Me and Taylor are fighting, so that sucks,” she says. “My threshold for bulls— with men is just — I don’t have one anymore. In relationships, you have to move together.”

After they split in the film, the singer breaks down in tears as she alludes to the fact that her growing career might have contributed to the breakup. Gaga and Kinney called it quits shortly after she landed a leading role in A Star Is Born.

“My love life has just imploded,” she says. “I sold 10 million [records] and lost Matt [“Dada” Williams, a producer she dated in 2009 and 2010]. I sold 30 million and lost Luke [Carl, a bar owner she dated in 2005 and 2010]. I did a movie and lose Taylor. It’s like a turnover. This is the third time I’ve had my heart broken like this.”
