Triple talaq ordinance to be renewed

more-in

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval to bring back the triple talaq ordinance that makes the practice of talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq by Muslim men a criminal offence with a jail term, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told a press conference.

The government adopted the ordinance route after the Bill lapsed, failing its passage in the Rajya Sabha in the recently concluded session of Parliament.

For the third time in less than a year, the triple talaq ordinance will become law once President Ram Nath Kovind signs it.

The Cabinet also approved an ordinance to plug loopholes in the corporate governance framework and improve the ease of doing business.

In the Budget session, the government failed to amend Companies Act that sought to re-categorize 16 minor offences as purely 'civil defaults'.

The move is seen as an attempt to bring down litigations for minor violations of the Companies Act and vastly improve the ease of doing business for corporates.

A third ordinance related to the functioning of the Indian Medical Council to ensure transparency, accountability and quality in the governance of medical education across the country.
