Veewon granted bail in Manipur
K Sarojkumar Sharma | TNN | Feb 20, 2019, 04:34 ISTImphal: An Imphal court on Tuesday released Manipuri Student Association, Delhi (MSAD) advisor and ex-president Thokchom Veewon on bail, maintaining that it did not find his Facebook post on the Citizenship (Amendment ) Bill to be prima facie seditious. The prosecution had demanded police custody for Veewon till February 22 but the plea was turned down by the court.
After obtaining a transit remand from the Saket court, Veewon was produced before the chief judicial magistrate (Imphal East) Ningthoujam Lanleima on Tuesday afternoon. The court said that, “After consideration of the material on record, I do not find the Facebook post as mentioned to be prima facie seditious.” The court then granted Veewon bail on a PR bond of Rs 30,000.
Veewon’s lawyers, including Rakesh Meihoubam, director Manipur unit of Human Rights Law Network (HRNL), had earlier objected to the remand prayer on certain grounds, submitting that the present court has no jurisdiction as the accused is a resident of Delhi.
Veewon had been arrested from his rented accomodation at Saket on February 15.
