PANAJI: Romeo, Sandy, Dolly, Happy, Denny and Daisy are the new recruits in the Goa police force. With their addition, the strength of their department now stands at 13, easing the pressure of their tricky job, which quite literally involves sniffing out trouble and trouble makers.
The recruits in question, six canines, were trained at the Intelligence Integrated Training Academy (IITA) in Telangana. With their addition, the dog squad has reached full strength.
A senior police officer told TOI that the passing-out parade was held on February 15 and that a special function will be held at police headquarters to induct them into the force. Each canine has come with a passport that includes its bloodline and country of origin. Two other dogs — Doberman Pinschers — which underwent training in Goa, have already been inducted into the dog squad.
The acquisition from Telangana has cost the state’s police force Rs 13.6 lakh. Apart from Telangana, Goa police had received a proposal from Haryana, but chose not to proceed with it as the dogs there would have been trained by foreign nationals.
"We need the dogs to understand local commands (generally in Hindi)," the officer had said, "Hence, we decided to procure them from Telangana."
Of the six dogs trained, two are conditioned to track and find explosives, while another two have been trained to detect narcotics.
All the canines have received obedience and scent conditioning, which will include sniffing out criminals during identification parades.
The pack comprises four Labrador Retrievers and two Doberman Pinschers. Police said that with six more canines joining the force it will help the police speed up investigations.
Dogs generally serve the force for nine years, after which they are retired on health grounds, sources said.
Around 12 constables are being trained as dog-handlers.
