“Redmi Note 7 Pro in-display fingerprint sensor is speculation at this point, though the company could launch the Pro model as the Redmi Note 7 in India”
Xiaomi will be hosting the Redmi Note 7 India launch event on February 28th. It has been teasing the Redmi Note 7 on social media to build hype around it ahead of the launch, with a recent poster showing some key features to whet the appetite of buyers. While a lot of the features shown in the teaser poster are not a surprise to anyone following the handset, one of the images has given rise to speculation that the Redmi Note 7, or perhaps the Pro variant, handset could have an in-display fingerprint sensor.
GSMArena in a post claimed the image shows “fingerprint scanner behind a display.” It also points out the official Redmi India handle replied to “select tweets, most of them mentioning exactly the Note 7 Pro variant.”
The image in question indeed shows a fingerprint sensor in a glass enclosure, but that doesn’t mean necessarily the handset in India will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. There are, of course, several tweets from users asking for the Pro model to be launched in India, with Xiaomi replying to some of them, including ones mentioning the in-display fingerprint sensor. To recall, the model launched in China has the biometric sensor on the back, not embedded in the screen itself.
It is likely that the in-display fingerprint sensor will be reserved for the Pro handset — in fact, there are speculations that the Pro model will be launched as the standard Redmi Note 7 in India. If that ends up being true, India will become the first market to see the smartphone as it is expected to launch in China after the Mi 9 unveiling. For now, the speculation remains unconfirmed as there is nothing from the company’s side that confirms the in-display biometric sensor for the Redmi Note 7 in the country.
Redmi Note 7 Pro has been confirmed to feature a primary rear camera with 48-megapixel Sony IMX 586 sensor. It will reportedly be powered by the Snapdragon 675 SoC and come with up to 6GB RAM and up to 128GB internal storage. A recent certification listing shows it will support 18W fast-charging. The Redmi Note 7 Pro price will start at RMB 1,499 (about Rs 15,500), according to rumours on Weibo.
