BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with Rotary Club, has set up bio-toilets for women in 10 slums in the city. Each slum has got four such toilets.

The BMC's deputy commissioner Srimanta Mishra said the work on the bio-toilets would be over in a day or two. "We have given a no-objection certificate to Rotary Club to set up the toilets. They conducted a survey and selected the sites," he said.

Officials said such bio-toilets had been installed for the first time. They have been set up in slums as they won't require cleaning of faecal sludge. "The toilets don't have permanent structures. They can be moved from one place to another and the faecal waste can be reduced to compost. The toilets will be opened for the public soon," said Rotary district trainer Jayshree Mohanty.

Rotary Club sources said the bio-toilets were eco-friendly and there was no need to dig pits to dump sludge.

The BMC has constructed 164 community toilets, 154 public and 320 modern toilets in the city and it has helped 12,435 households build individual household latrines.
