Ludhiana: On the rain-soaked grounds of Government Senior Secondary Smart School at Punjab Agricultural University, 400 students received cycles under Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme for girls on Monday. However, most of the cycles had deflated tyres.
There were 216 students of Class XI and 184 of Class XII who were given bicycles by MP Ravneet Singh Bittu. He said, “Under the scheme, 12,704 bicycles will be distributed to girl students in Ludhiana district.”

Many students were seen pulling the cycles after school hours and some hired autorickshaws to carry them home. Some even called their parents for assistance. Khushpreet Kaur Dhaliwal of Class XII resented, “How will I take the cycle home? We need to find an air-pump first.”

Another student, Preeti, said, “There was no need to distribute cycles as the session is nearing end. My younger brother and sister can use it now. I used to come in a van by paying Rs 500 per month. Now, the last working day for Class XII is February 25. Just a week before the session ends, the government is providing cycles.”

Pratibha Kumari had bought a second-hand cycle from her friend who got it under the same scheme. “My friend passed out of school and sold me her bicycle for Rs 1,200. I was in need, so I bought it.”

Every day, Noor Sabha, who lives in Rajan Estate, spends Rs 20 on autorickshaw and walks from Haibowal Chowk to school. She said, “With this cycle, now the travel time of 45 minutes will be covered in 20 minutes, but the session is getting over.” There were some who saw a silver lining. Renu, a Class XII student from Rajguru Nagar, said, “My mother bought a second-hand cycle for me, but it was not in good condition. Now I will use this new cycle.”

Sanjeev Thapar, school principal, said, “The cycles were handed over to us a day before. Tyres cannot be deflated, as these were new. We, however, provided air pump at the school.” DEO Swaranjit Kaur said, “I was busy in a meeting and am not aware of the issue. I will check with the principal.”

Ravneet Singh Bittu said smart classes would be developed in all 137 government schools in Ludhiana city. Rs 6.28 crore have already been allotted to the education department for the project. “A grant of Rs 10 lakh will be allocated to each school to develop smart classes. We hope to complete the project by March,” he added.
