The Madras High Court held a special sitting on Sunday to grant urgent interim bail to a prisoner who was ordered to be released forthwith and execute a bail bond on Monday.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh granted the relief since the prisoner’s mother had died on Saturday and he had to perform the final rites on Sunday.
After directing the superintendent of Central Prison at Puzhal near here to release the petitioner immediately on receipt of the court order, the judge permitted the petitioner to proceed to his house straight from the prison along with an escort who was given the responsibility of producing him before a Metropolitan Magistrate on Monday.
On such production, the petitioner should execute a bail bond for ₹5,000 along with two sureties for a like sum and report before the investigating officer daily until further orders, the judge ordered and adjourned the bail petition for further hearing on February 27.
