“We plan to improve the skills of tourism-related officials and tour guides as well as hotel and restaurant services, and improve the standard of the goods we produce,” she said.

The elephant festival in Pathoumphon district and the Vat Phou festival are two significant celebrations this month targeted at attracting tourists.

Last week, the elephant festival was arranged in Kiet Ngong village, and included elephant and street parades, a baci ceremony for elephants, traditional performances by the students and other activities.

From February 17-19, the department will arrange the Vat Phou festival with several interesting activities like a concert, parades by locals from nine districts and an exhibition of the products made by local people. However, festival admission is free with car parking set at 60,000 kip per vehicle.

The remains of Vat Phou temple in Champassak district are over 1,000 years old. The annual festival is organized to appreciate the temple complex. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well.

From 8am to 5pm, tourists can enter the site every day to worship at Buddha images as well as take pictures of several ancient structures and panoramic views.

The provinces of southern Laos have many well-known tourist sites, both natural and historical. Champassak is one such province and should never be missed out.

The province has around 216 officially chosen tourist spots, including 116 natural, 60 cultural and 40 historical places of interest, but only 20 have any visitor facilities.

Khonphapheng, Tad Fan and Tad Yeuang waterfalls are among the natural wonders, with activities like adventure treks and ziplining to explore. Also, visitors can enjoy produce from the Bolaven Plateau, including its famed coffee.
