MUMBAI: A 27-year-old man was arrested by the CSMT GRP on Monday for allegedly molesting a woman in a running Central Railway local nine days ago, prompting her to jump off the ladies coach. Profusely injured, the woman had walked up to Masjid station where policemen spotted her and rushed her to a public hospital.
"Ashraf Ali Shaikh - the prime suspect - bears strong resemblance to the culprit captured on CCTVs on Central Railway," said a police officer. Shaikh is unemployed and does not have a fixed place of residence. The police are making further inquiries with him.
On February 9, the 30-year-old victim boarded a local from CSMT, unaware that the train was headed to the yard. The woman works at Parel. As the train started, a man came and sat near her. She yelled at him and asked him to leave, but he wouldnt. As the train started moving, the woman panicked. She got up and stood in the passage close to the door. The man followed her and started touching her inappropriately.
When the train did not stop at Masjid, the woman was terrified. She jumped off the local between Masjid and Sandhurst Road stations and landed on the tracks. Bleeding, she somehow got up and staggered up to Masjid station where patrolling cops spotted her and rushed her to St George's Hospital. Later, her husband, who is also a cop, was informed.
Shaikh has been booked on charges of molestation under the IPC.
