Minister for Urban Development U.T. Khader said here on Sunday that the government intends to promote the areas between Manipal in Udupi and Konaje in Dakshina Kannada as an education and health corridor.
A study will be conducted to identify the infrastructure facilities required to realise it, he said.
After inaugurating a modern market-cum-commercial complex of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) at Kavoor, the Minister said the government will also take up a study on the feasibility of taking up a metro railway project in Mangaluru, Mysuru, and Hubballi-Dharwad.
Usually, metro railway projects are taken up in cities having more than 20 lakh population. But keeping the future growth of these cities, the study will be taken up, he said.
The Minister said that the government wants to repair and rejuvenate all ‘raja kaluves’ (storm water drains) in all cities in the State. Mr. Khader said a new market being built at Alake here at an estimated ₹1 crore will be opened in a month.
The foundation stone for building a new market complex at Mallikatta, by demolishing the existing one, will be laid shortly. It will be constructed at an estimated ₹12 crore.
The government has also approved of building a new market at Kankanady by demolishing the existing one at an estimated cost of ₹42 crore, he said.
Meanwhile, the Kavoor market is the first market in the city to have a sewage treatment plant (STP) and a biodegradable waste crusher unit. The unit will crush non-vegetarian and vegetable waste as fine particles and flush it into the drain to join the STP. It will crush fruit and vegetable peels, leftover banana, and leaves, leftover food, bones, eggshells and the like.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹5.2 crore, the complex has a basement plus three floors. According to a senior official of the corporation, the basement has a provision for parking 16 cars and two-wheelers. The lower ground floor will have the vegetable market while the upper ground floor will have non-vegetarian stalls. It has a provision for 12 fish stalls, two egg stalls, and a stall each for selling dry fish, chicken, and mutton.
The official said the complex has 57 commercial shops which will be rented out on auction basis in the front.
