CHANDIGARH: Many station house officers (SHOs) have barred visitors from carrying mobile phones to police stations.
Sources said after the CBI sleuths arrested Mauli Jagran police station SHO Baljeet Singh in a graft case, senior officials issued verbal orders to SHOs to ban mobiles in police stations. Earlier, names of two SHOs of Sector 31 police station had surfaced in the graft cases. Both SHOs were sent to police lines.
At the Sector 17 police station, TOI found a woman cop sitting next to the sentry post and taking details of visitors and collecting their mobile phones. Slips are pasted on the phones, kept on the rack and then visitors allowed to enter the police station. She said the practice has been started since more than a week. Similarly, SHOs of Sector 26, Manimajra, IT Park, Sector 19, Mauli Jagran and Sector 31 have ordered to confiscate phones of visitors before allowing them inside.
The decision has raised questions whether cops want to hide something from people at the police stations. “If the cops are right and not indulging any wrong practices, why are they scared of mobile phones in police stations,” asked a few residents. However, cops said the steps has been taken to ensure the safety and security of government buildings and personnel.
Rashmi Yadav, DSP, public relations officer, UT, said it would be unfair to suggest cops fear some activities will be caught on mobile phones.” Seeing the threat to government buildings and the security of visitors and complainants, such action is being taken across the country,” the DSP said.
Police stations already have many checks like CCTVs to ensure complainants /visitors are taken care of and police officials are bound to serve them, the DSP added.
