From the tourism sector in 2018, Kerala netted record revenue of Rs. 36,528.01 crore, regulating an increase of Rs 2,874.33 crore from the year before that.
Last year, around 16.7 million tourists visited Kerala as opposed to 15.76 million the year prior to that, recrecording a growths of 5.93 percent. Of the total footfalls, 1.09 million were international tourists. The share of revenue from overseas visitors touched Rs 8,764.46 crore. Also, domestic tourism sector gained during that time with visitors exceeding 15.6 million, showing an increase of 6.35 per cent.
“It is significant that the number of tourists who visited Kerala almost touched half the state’s total population. This impressive growth has been achieved against adverse factors such as the century’s severest deluge,” said Kerala tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran.
Considerably, in the first quarter of the year up till March 31st, tourist arrival to the state witnessed an imposing 12.3 percent growth in the case of international visitors and 20 percent in the case of domestic tourists. The outbreak of Nipah in May in few sections of the state and the devastating floods in August caused a drop in arrivals. This trend, nevertheless, was quickly upturned by the strong actions of the state government and tourism department, putting back the sector firmly on the growth trajectory, Surendran said.
