Truck driver, 48, 'swerves through traffic, runs over guard posts and hits cop cars during wild 70km police chase'

A Queensland truck driver is behind bars today after allegedly taking police on a dangerous 70km chase along the Pacific Highway in northern NSW with his headlights off.

Concerned motorists called Triple Zero just after 8pm when they saw the B-Double truck laden with 50 tonnes of freight swerving through traffic and and running over guard posts, police claim.

Dashcam footage of the incident obtained by Nine showed the truck being pursued by police.

'It's on like Donkey Kong,' one motorist said.

'What the f***? What the f***, man?' another can be heard.  

Highway patrol officers tried to stop the truck 20km south of Grafton but the driver allegedly tried to run the patrol car off the road and continued driving.

Police pursued the driver to the centre of Grafton where it's alleged he then side-swiped a paddy wagon.

The man drove north for another 50km before stopping on at Mororo Bridge. 

Police allege the driver, Adam Lyall, resisted attempts to remove him from the truck's cabin before being arrested.

Lyall, 48, was then taken to Grafton Base Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

He was kept in hospital overnight due to concerns he was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine.  

Lyall had been working as a subcontractor for transport company Cameron Interstate. 

The company is cooperating with police and has said it is extremely concerned by the incident. 

No one was injured during the incident and the driver is facing serious dangerous driving charges.
