Peter Brown, who led Automotive News for a quarter-century until his retirement in 2013, has been named to the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.
Brown took charge of Automotive News as editor in 1989 after serving as the founding editor of Crain's Detroit Business. He retired at age 65 as publisher and editorial director.
In between, he cemented his reputation as a fierce defender of editorial integrity over commercial interests. Among his achievements were the creation of Automotive News Europe, the Automotive News Data Center and the Automotive News PACE Awards program, now in its 25th year.
His career also included reporting and editing stints at the Ann Arbor News and Detroit Free Press. He will be inducted at a ceremony in East Lansing, Mich., on April 14.
Brown joins two former Automotive News colleagues in the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame: Keith Crain (2008), editor-in-chief; and the late John K. Teahen Jr. (2006), longtime managing editor and senior editor.
