43 guesthouses in South Delhi get challans

NEW DELHI: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has issued challans and showcause notices to 43 guesthouses for violating safety norms during the weekend.
The exercise to inspect guesthouses, hotels and restaurants started after the Karol Bagh fire tragedy last Monday, which killed 17 people.
“We visited over 59 guesthouses on the weekend, mostly in GK-I and II and found violations at 43 of them in the form of restaurants running on terrace or installed generators. We have also issued notices to the guesthouses located on narrow lanes and have narrow staircases,” said a SDMC official.
There are 388 guesthouses, 2,000 restaurants and 34 hotels in SDMC’s jurisdiction.
Delhi government has also been carrying similar drive in city and till Monday, it has cancelled fire NOC of 105 guesthouses in Karol Bagh. “On Monday, we withdrew the fire safety certificates of 48 hotels,” said a government official.
