TRICHY: Encouraging the usage of environment-friendly products as a replacement to plastics, the Trichy Corporation on Monday conducted an awareness programme in Thevar hall here to produce jute bags.

The self-help groups (SHGs), entrepreneurs, and traders participated in the event were informed about the schemes available in producing and marketing various types of bags from jute in the backdrop of the plastic ban under enforcement since January 1, 2019.

Stating that jute bag production units can be started with investments ranging between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh, NJB said that entrepreneurs, apart from addressing the local demands, can eye the international market where jute-based value-added products attract lucrative prices.

“Average stitching skill and a heavy duty sewing machine are the requirements for launching a jute bag production unit,” T Ayyappan, deputy director, National Jute Board, Chennai, said.

As jute has got high tensile strength than its rivals such as plastic and paper bags, participants were informed that bags made of jute fabrics are durable and serviceable though the jute-based bags are expensive than rest. National Jute Board officials requested the aspiring entrepreneurs to avail further details from indianjute.blogspot.com.
