One killed as SUV rams bridge, falls into river
tnn | Feb 19, 2019, 04:02 ISTAllahabad: An SUV carrying two youth fell off a pontoon bridge into Ganga killing one of the passengers, on the Mela ground late Sunday night.
Police said that the deceased was identified as Abhyuday Mishra (20), while his friend Pranjal Tripathi (22) was rescued by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Mishra and Tripathi were residents of Baihrana and Handia, respectively.
SSP (Kumbh) KP Singh said that the accident occurred around 2am when Mishra and Tripathi were driving on pontoon bridge number 15. “The driver lost control on the SUV which rammed the railing of the bridge and fell into the river,” he added. On being alerted, a 15-member NDRF team rushed to the spot and rescued Tripathi from the river. The SSP said that Tripathi was rushed to hospital for treatment. Mishra, however, could not be rescued.
NDRF personnel meanwhile managed to retrieve Mishra’s body on early Monday morning. Singh said that SUV was pulled out of the river with the help of a crane. “Things will be clearer once police record the rescued youth’s statement,” he added. Monday’s accident was the third such case when a vehicle fell into the river, after breaking a pontoon bridge railing.
