GREATER NOIDA: A 55-year-old construction worker from Malda in West Bengal died after a portion of a basement wall collapsed on him. Police said Raghunath Mandal was working at the site of an IT complex in Sector 6 when the accident occurred.
No complaint had been filed till late on Sunday evening. Around 12.30pm on Sunday, the mud wall collapsed on Raghunath and another labourer who were digging into the basement.
Raghunath was apparently working with his friend and roommate Rajkumar when the wall collapsed on both. Rajkumar escaped with injuries but Raghunath got buried under the debris and died by the time he was rescued by other workers.
“We received information about the accident from the authorities of the district hospital in Sector 29. Raghunath was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. The labourer died after getting buried under the debris. Other workers who were there have told us that he lay trapped under the debris for around 15 minutes. The body has been sent for an autopsy,” said Rajveer Singh Chauhan, the SHO of Sector 20 police station. Raghunath, who was injured in the wall collapse, said his roommate suffered from asthma and the two had come to Delhi together a few years ago to earn a livelihood while their respective families stayed in Malda.
“We were from the same village and found job at the construction site where the basement was getting built. We were in the basement when the mud wall suddenly collapsed on both of us. We ran for cover, but he fell down and got buried under the debris. We rescued him with the help of a crane after 15 minutes, but he had died by then,” Raghunath said.
Shariq, the owner of the plot, dubbed the accident “unfortunate”. “I rushed to the site as soon as I heard about the accident. We will be cooperating with the police,” he said.
Chauhan said the police were probing if there was any negligence on the part of the builder. “There has been no complaint filed against anyone in the case. However, we are investigating the matter. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty,” Chauhan added.
