AHMEDABAD: Nearly 40 days after the murder of former BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali, police officials on Sunday announced the arrest of two alleged shooters - Shashikant Kamble and Ashraf Anwar Shaikh - from a Gujarat government guest house in Saputara on Saturday evening.
Both the accused are natives of Pune.
Bhanushali was shot dead by two shooters aboard the Sayajinagri Express train on the night of January 7. The killers had then pulled the emergency chain of the train coach and fled the spot.
Ashish Bhatia, DGP, CID (Crime) and Railways, said that the shooters were given a contract to kill Bhanushali by former BJP leader Chhabil Patel. The shooters were promised an amount of Rs 30 lakh of which Rs five lakh were paid two months ago at a mall in Mumbai. Kamble and Shaikh have confessed to this in primary interrogation with the police officials, added Bhatia.
After getting the contact, Kamble had first come to Ahmedabad by train and Patel himself took him to Bhanushali’s house in city and then in Bhuj to chalk out a plan to kill the former BJP MLA. But as the locations were in densly populated areas, they dropped the plan.
Later, Kamble asked Patel that it would be easier to kill Bhanushali while he is travelling in a train. After few days, Kamble again came to Ahmedabad. Patel took Kamble to his farm house, said a police official.
Finally, they decided to kill Bhanushali in a train between Bhuj and Samakhiyali because there were various ways to flee the spot after the killing. But as Patel had many legal cases pending against him, he told Kamble not to kill Bhanushali until cases are disposed off.
After few days, Patel called up Kamble and asked him to come with weapon to eliminate Bhaushali. This time, Shaikh arranged the weapon for Kamble and then the latter reached Bhuj on December 27.
“For around four days, Kamble stayed at the farm house and decided to kill Bhanushali on December 31. But as Kamble did not get Bhanushali’s seat number and coach number, they dropped the plan. However, Shaikh landed in Bhuj on the same day and they chalked out new plan to kill Bhanushali on January 7,” said an official.
The duo had then boarded the Sayajinagari Express, entered Bhanushali’s coupe and shot him.
