Man in hospital after allegedly eating drugs while running from police

A man has been rushed to hospital after eating a "large quantity" of drugs while fleeing officers north of Brisbane, police say.

Police said officers tried to stop a silver hatchback on Old Gympie Road, Burpengary, about 10.50pm on Saturday but the vehicle sped away.

A short time later, the hatchback allegedly sped through a red light and crashed into another vehicle on Deception Bay Road before the driver fled the scene.

A dog squad officer began a search of the area and a 22-year-old man was found and taken into custody.

Almost $11,000 in cash was found nearby.

"The man then began to show signs of illness after having allegedly eaten a large quantity of methyl amphetamine while he ran from police," a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.

"He was immediately transported to Caboolture Hospital for further treatment."

Police also searched the vehicle and seized items for examination, including a number of number plates.

The man was released from hospital and taken to the Caboolture Watchhouse on Sunday but was yet to be charged on Sunday afternoon.

Investigations are continuing.
