Coimbatore: A 34-year-old woman stabbed her estranged husband to death with a broken beer bottle and attempted to commit suicide by consuming mosquito repellent at Sugunapuram here on the early hours of Sunday. The woman is battling for her life at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
The deceased was identified as B Baburaj, 36, of Balamurugan temple street at Sugunapuram. A carpenter, he was married to B Bakkiyam with three daughters.

According to police, Baburaj had fallen for another woman two years ago and started to live with her at BK Pudur near Kuniyamuthur.

On Saturday night, Baburaj went to his wife’s house at Sugunapuram in an inebriated condition. When Bakkiyam asked him to leave the place immediately, he picked up a fight with her and in a fit of rage attempted to murder her with a broken beer bottle. “Bakkiyam, however, retaliated and beat him up with a wooden log. Later, she grabbed the broken beer bottle and stabbed him,” a police officer said.

When she realized that she had murdered her husband, she attempted to commit suicide by consuming mosquito repellent and sleeping pills.

At 4am on Sunday, their elder daughter found her father in a pool of blood and her mother with frothing at mouth and informed neighbours, who alerted the Kuniyamuthur police.

Police took the two to CMCH, where doctors declared Baburaj brought dead. The Kuniyamuthur police have registered a case against Bakkiyam, whose condition is said to be stable, under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and further investigation is on.
