Friday Picks: The Heights, The Graham Norton Show, Coast New Zealand
THE HEIGHTS
Series premiere ★★★★
8.30pm, ABC
This smart soap has the potential to outlast its established network counterparts as long as it is afforded the same unconditional love. The mystery, suspense and kitchen sink drama is backed up with a naturally flowing script and domestic detail that is never merely incidental. A kicking soundtrack underscores the David-and-Goliath central plotline, around which are neatly woven interpersonal narratives that speak to the problems and experiences of the less than affluent.
THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW
★★★
8.30pm, Ten
Ethereal actor Saoirse Ronan, who skyrocketed to fame in Greta Gerwin's film, Lady Bird, will be on Graham's comfy couch tonight to no doubt continue trying to educate the American guests about how to correctly pronounce her name. Also, she'll talk about her latest cinematic triumph, Mary Queen of Scots. The other luminaries include Laura Linney, on her role in the London stage production of My Name is Lucy Burton; and Timothee Chalamet on biographical crystal meth film, Beautiful Boy.
COAST NEW ZEALAND
Series premiere ★★★★
7.30pm, SBS
Scottish archaeologist Neil Oliver's obsession with where the land meets the sea makes for armchair travel at its most cerebral. In this especially dramatic landscape, he delves into the strange and dismal history of the crevices of Fiordland National Park, and enlists local experts to reveal treasures lurking on the seabed. The result is a combination of fascinating stories of human and natural survival in this stunning, yet unforgiving part of the world.
