Sizzling strikes guide Sydney past Kerr's Glory in W-League thriller

Sydney FC have outgunned Perth Glory in a pulsating W-League grand final, with a series of staggeringly good goals steering them to a 4-2 victory on Saturday.

In front of a record crowd of 6127 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, the Sky Blues vanquished their recent finals demons in style to clinch their third championship and first in five years.

Sofia Huerta opened the scoring in just the sixth minute with a rasping shot from distance while fellow US import Sofia McCaskill grabbed a double, with her first an intelligent, inch-perfect header which looped over the head of Glory goalkeeper Eliza Campbell.

But they had to hold off a dogged Glory outfit who kept on coming - until Chloe Logarzo provided what proved to be the sealer in the 70th minute with arguably the best goal of the lot.

The victory snaps a forgettable recent run in the finals for the Sky Blues, who were beaten in their last two W-League deciders - including last season against Melbourne City.

For the star attraction, Sam Kerr, it was a disappointing afternoon. Kerr was an ever-present threat and scored the penalty in the 22nd minute which squared things up at 1-1, and tried her best to fire her teammates up when all looked lost.

Her quest to bring a maiden W-League championship to her hometown club continues, but whether she returns to try again next season or decides to test herself in Europe remains to be seen.

The Sky Blues made a hot start and should have taken the lead in just the second minute, when the lively Princess Ibini crossed for McCaskill, who had the goal at her mercy from point-blank range. Somehow, the American managed to hit the crossbar.

It was a massive let-off for Perth but the hosts made up for it just four minutes later courtesy of an incredible strike from Huerta. McCaskill laid the ball off for her just outside the box and Huerta took one touch, sized up the target and let rip with a thunderous shot into the top-right corner.

That made it 1-0 to Sydney FC but with Kerr lurking with intent, it was never going to stay that way. In the 22nd minute, she proved she doesn't even need to touch the ball to pose a threat.

Kerr took off in an attempt to gather a loose ball on the edge of the Glory's penalty area but before she could, she was collected by Danielle Colaprico, who tried to clear but instead kicked her Chicago Red Stars teammate on the shin. Kerr duly converted the penalty to draw Perth level.

Four minutes from the break, though, the Sky Blues put themselves in front once again. Caitlin Foord sent in an early cross from the right for McCaskill, who spotted Campbell off her line and popped a brilliant looping header into the back of the net.

McCaskill nabbed her second in the 61st minute with a sharp reaction goal from close range. Sydney were 3-1 up and looked like they would coast to victory, but as is so often the case in the W-League, there was a sting in the tail.

Again, the finish was sublime. Nicole Stanton's corner kick picked out Alyssa Mautz, who sidefooted the ball past Aubrey Bledsloe's reach.

Suddenly, the Glory had a sniff. But two minutes later, it was snuffed out. Mautz tried to clear Perth's lines at the other end of the park but didn't do the job properly. Logarzo was there to clean up on the edge of the box, bending in an explosive first-time shot. It was a fitting way to finish an enthralling, madcap contest.
