SHAHJAHANPUR: Police in UP’s Shahjahanpur on Saturday booked a youth for sedition over his “anti-India” slogan posted on his Facebook account wall. The post was taken down shortly, but not before drawing 55 “likes” and inviting attention of local outfits which approached police with a complaint.
The youth, identified as Mohammad Farman, was booked under Indian Penal Code section 124 A (sedition) and section 68 of IT Act (for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) at Sadar Bazar police station of Shahjahanpur.

After registering the FIR, local police have now launched a hunt for the youth, who is from Shahjahanpur and is believed to be studying in Delhi.

Farman’s Facebook wall shows that he completed his studies from Islamia Inter College of Shahjahanpur and also that he lives in Delhi now.

Station house officer (SHO) of Sadar Bazar police station, Ram Naresh Yadav, told TOI: “We have filed an FIR under IPC section 124A and 68 IT act against the accused, who is believed to be a resident of Shahjahanpur and currently lives in New Delhi. He had now removed the post from his Facebook wall, but we have received a copy of his post with the complaint. He will be arrested soon.”

While complainant Abhay Thakur told TOI: “Action should be taken against such a person. He doesn’t deserve to be called an Indian and should be sent behind the bars at the earliest.”
