‘Present structure is dilapidated’

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition was filed in Telangana High Court seeking direction to the government to build a new multi-storied complex for accommodating Osmania General Hospital (OGH) as some blocks of its present building are dilapidated and unsafe.

Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association, a society working on medical and health issues, which filed the petition also prayed for an interim order to shift the hospital building, nursing college and hostel to a safer place. Explaining the glorious history of the OGH, the petitioner submitted to the court that successive heads of government had been making statements — and some had issued orders — to construct new building for the hospital.

In 2010, the then united Andhra Pradesh State government issued an order announcing in-principle approval for construction of new building for hospital in six acres of land behind the main building. As per the proposal, a built up space of two lakh square feet with ₹200 crore over three years was sanctioned.

The order proposed to hire an internationally reputed consultant through international competitive bidding to construct new building for the hospital. A high power committee with chief secretary as chairman was also mooted. However, nothing materialised even as years passed by, the petitioner said.

Even the present Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao visited and inspected the OGH in 2015, he stated. The petitioner maintained that the CM, after the inspection, told the media persons that OGH building would not last more than three to four years and announced that OGH would be relocated soon.
