In the last 15 days, the Hyderabad traffic police have caught 1,788 people driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Traffic police filed charge-sheets against all of them and they were produced in the Third and Fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Courts in Nampally here. The courts, which awarded imprisonment to the 468 respondents also cancelled or suspended driving licences of 108 persons for periods ranging from six months to seven years, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Anil Kumar.
“A fine of ₹ 38.48 lakh was imposed on traffic violators by the court and those sentenced for imprisonment were sent to Chanchalguda central prisons,” he said. In addition, three violators were imprisoned for dangerous driving and other top violations of traffic norms.
Counselling given
The violators were also counselled at Traffic Training Institutes in Goshamahal and Begumpet. The drive against the drunken driving and other violations will continue for the safety of commuters, Mr Kumar said.
He said that respondents who were convicted in drunk driving and other cases may face difficulties in getting government jobs, passports and Visa clearance.
