UNIDENTIFED COMPETITOR CROSSING FINISHING LINE STORY: It makes for a stunning site - dozens of snowkiters racing across a frozen lake in Italy on either skis or snowboards.

More than 70 people competed at the event, sliding around a 7km course.

Whoever covered the most ground over 90 minutes came out the winner.

On Friday, with conditions close to perfect, Germany's Florian Gruber dominated the ski division, leading right from the start, with fellow German Felix Kersten just behind in second place.

In the snowboard division, 17 year-old Russian Valeria Garashchenko prevailed with a stunning performance, beating all of her male and female rivals.

The Resia event continues on Saturday (February 16) with further disciplines and freestyle competitions, before finishing up on Sunday (February 17).

But the competitors won't have long to wait for the third round of the Snowkite World Cup, with an event in Tolyatti, Russia due to take place from 20 - 24 February.
