Sister Lucy Kalapura, a member of the Franciscan Clarist convent in Wayanad, who had taken part in a street protest by nuns in Kochi demanding the arrest of rape-accused bishop Franco Mulakkal in September last year, has been issued a second canonical warning by the Superior General of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, demanding an unconditional written willingness to ‘reform’ herself.
“I will be constrained to proceed with your dismissal” from the congregation if she failed to do so, warned the letter issued by Superior General Ann Joseph.
The letter reiterates Sister Lucy’s ‘violations of canonical norms’ such as her refusal to obey the order to meet the Superior General in person, refusal to obey transfer order, refusal to submit her salary to the community from December 2017, irregular participation in community prayer, meal, purchase of a personal car without proper consent, ‘monetary transactions in publishing a book..’, publication of a book against orders, appearances on television and social media without the permission of legitimate superiors, and violation of dress code of the congregation.
Canonical violations
“For all canonical violations, you are trying to present personal justifications... Your written reply was evaluated by me, together with my council members and I find it insufficient and unacceptable.’’
The “FCC cannot accept your explanations as satisfactory, since the allegations against you are judicially proven,” reads the letter to Sister Lucy.
It has given Sister Lucy time till March 10 to give an unconditional declaration in writing of her compliance with the instructions of her ‘legitimate superior.’
