One of those arrested was a disgruntled employee of the doctor couple.
Dr Ashish Choudhary and wife Dr Sapna had received a letter written in Hindi demanding Rs50 lakhs and warning them of dire consequences. The couple, who has two children, had received the letter addressed to Dr Sapna by post on February 8.
The writer had also informed the couple that they were having details of their children, their schools and other family members. Dr Ashish owns a private hospital at Gandhinagar while Dr Sapna has a private pathology laboratory on Wardha Road. The letter writer had stated that the place and time for handing over the amount would be shared later.
The couple then received a threat call on February 12. The caller threatened Dr Sapna of dire consequences for ignoring demands.
The callers made more attempts to contact Dr Sapna but she did not reply. After being contacted by the couple, police started tracing the cell phone number.
The cops then zeroed down upon Abdul Waheed who was using the cell phone to make the threat calls. He claimed to have fond the mobile phone on the road. Sources in the crime branch claimed that Waheed may have stolen the mobile phone from a person, identified as Jain, while he was travelling in train. Jain, who is from Madhya Pradesh, is currently now in Chhattisgarh.
After questioning Waheed, Ambazari police arrested Mangesh Uikey, Radheshyam Sarkar, Mohsin Khan and his younger brother Feroze. Sarkar, who used to work at Dr Sapna’s laboratory, was unhappy with his salary. He had shared the details of Dr Sapna and her husband with his landlord Uikey who is close to gangster Mohsin.
Mohsin then shared the details of the couple with his elder brother Feroze. Police said Feroze and Mohsin had several criminal records. Police said the threatening letter was written by Uikey while calls were made by Feroze.
Ambazari police now intend to make Waheed their prime witness and not place him under arrest.
