Chinna Thambi lodged in kraal at elephant camp
TNN | Feb 16, 2019, 23:55 ISTCoimbatore: Rogue tusker Chinna Thambi, who was captured from Sarkar Kannadipudur village near Madathukulam in Tirupur district on Friday, was shifted to a kraal at Varakaliyar elephant camp near Topslip early Saturday morning.
The 25-year-old tusker remained calm while being shifted to the enclosure, district forest officer of Pollachi division AS Marimuthu told TOI. “It was friendly with the kumki elephants in the camp and obeyed them.”
The forest department has no intention to train Chinna Thambi and turn it into a kumki elephant, the official said. “It will be released inside the camp premises after it befriends other elephants here. He will become a captive elephant and will be taught to obey some instructions given by mahouts.”
The camp has 25 captive elephants including five kumkis. The forest department used the kumkis to capture wild elephants or drive them away from agricultural fields on forest fringes. Some of them are used for safari.
Chinna Thambi was first captured from Thadagam valley on January 25 and was translocated to the reserve forest near Topslip on January 26. However, the elephant walked more than 100km and entered human habitations again.
