Pharmacy student in Moradabad slapped with sedition charges for WhatsApp status

MORADABAD: A pharmacy student of a private college in UP’s Moradabad was on Saturday booked for sedition over his alleged WhatsApp status in which he has praised Pakistan. As the word spread, scores of right wing group members armed with guns and iron rods barged into Moradabad Institute of Technology (MIT) in search of the B Pharma first-year student,Mujassam.
They also fired gun shots in the air and demanded custody of Mujassam from the college security which, in turn, called police.
Later, Mujassam was booked under sedition charges, and was arrested.
Station house officer (SHO) of Civil Lines police station, Sudhir Pal Rana, said: “Mujassam was booked under section 124 A (sedition) 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony ) and 323 ( voluntarily causing hurt) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).”
The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by BJP leader Rohit Kumar, he added.
Police said that Mujassam has since deleted the status.
Circle officer (CO) Rajesh Kumar said: “We checked all the accounts and the status of the student on the social network sites including WhatsApp. But, it seems, he has deleted and changed his status on WhatsApp. We have asked the cyber cell officials to retrieve the deleted data of the student.”
Meanwhile, police said that action will also be taken against those behind the brawl at the college campus.
On Saturday morning, scores of members of right wing outfits barged into the college and entered into a brawl with the security demanding custody of Mujassam. They were armed with guns and also opened fire in air.
CO Kumar told TOI said: “Stringent action will be taken against those who barged into the campus and opened a fire. We have access to the CCTV footages of the entire incident and the process to identify the offenders is on.”
