Authorities said five people are dead after an employee opened fire at a manufacturing plant in Aurora, Illinois, on Friday afternoon. Multiple people were hurt during the incident; five police officers were shot and one suffered a knee injury.
On Friday night, police confirmed the officers are in stable condition.
The suspected gunman was also killed. The Aurora Police Department identified the suspected gunman as 45-year-old Gary Martin.
The department believes he was an employee at Henry Pratt Company, where the shooting happened.
Police said the gunman's motive is unclear.
Schools in the area were under a soft lockdown while police were on the scene.
The Aurora Police Department tweeted the situation has been secured and that the "shooter is no longer a threat to the area." At a news conference, the city's mayor addressed the incident saying "today is a sad day in the city of Aurora." "It's a shame mass shootings, such as this, have become commonplace in our country," Mayor Richard Irvin said.
