The Additional District Sessions Court, Thalassery, on Saturday awarded life imprisonment to nine workers of the Popular Front of India and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in the case of murder of Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker Naroth Dileepan in 2008.
The court found them guilty on February 14.
The convicted are P.K. Latheef, U.K. Siddhique, U.K. Faisal, V.K. Unais, P. Faisal, V. Muhammed Basheer, district president of the SDPI, T. Yakoob, Muhammed Farooq, and Paneri Gafoor. The court also slapped a fine of ₹30,000 on each of them. The court had acquitted seven of the 16 accused in the case.
Dileepan, branch Secretary of the CPI(M) at Chakkad, was fatally attacked near Vilakkod on August 24, 2008 when he was on his way home after attending a party campaign, apparently in retaliation for the murder of National Development Front (NDF) worker Sainuddeen at Kakkayangad 2 months before.
