VUDA areas to get water from Sindhrot water supply scheme
TNN | Feb 17, 2019, 04:00 ISTVadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to provide drinking water to Vadodara Urban Development Authority (VUDA) areas from its upcoming Sindhrot water supply scheme. Several VUDA areas do not have fresh drinking water supply and rely on borewells.
VMC’s standing committee cleared a proposal to provide 20 million litres per day (MLD) water to VUDA areas towards the west of the city. The authority will have to pay the civic body for the water as well as share the cost of the water supply project based on Mahi river.
The VMC has begun work on the Rs 165.76crore Sindhrot water supply scheme and work on it is expected to get over this year. The civic body has been given a nod by the state government to draw 300MLD water in a phased manner. In the first phase it plans to draw 100MLD water from the river.
VUDA had sought water from the VMC for the villages of Gorwa, Undera, Koyli, Ankodiya, Khanpur, Sherkhi, Sevasi, Mahapura, Gokalpura, Bhaili, Bil and others. The villages have seen realty development over the years, but there is no project to cater to their present needs of water.
The Sindhrot water project is coming up under the central government’s AMRUT scheme. The VMC is to contribute Rs 95.76crore for the project. The VUDA had earlier agreed to pay Rs 19.15crore towards the project, contributing 20 per cent of what VMC was to bear. The VMC sought that VUDA should bear 20 per cent of the entire project cost amounting to Rs 33.15crore. The permissions for the increased amount are in process in VUDA and a nod is expected soon.
VUDA will also have to bear 20 per cent of the operation and management costs of the water supply project. It will also have to pay water charges as decided by VMC from time to time. The VMC has also put a condition that VUDA will supply water only for domestic purposes.
