5 best hairstyles & makeup looks spotted at New York Fashion Week AW 2019

From neon bright wigs and supersonic chignons, to abstract smoky eyes, skin-tone lips and dreamy ethereal glitter—Vogue gives you the lowdown on the latest hair and makeup trends emerging from New York Fashion Week

Beauty Trends

Once fresh-faced and low-maintenance, there’s been a monumental shift in beauty at New York Fashion Week this season, with expression and individualism now the order of the day. No-makeup makeup and natural hair were pushed aside in favour of bright colour, bold statements, and plenty of actual makeup.

Here are the five key trends to emerge from the week:

The trend: Punk rebels

Where we’ve seen it:
Anna Sui, Jeremy Scott, Collina Strada, Carolina Herrera

What you need to know:
Think colour, neons and an homage to punk-rock rebellion. Neon pink and blue wigs created by hair stylist Garren were seen at Anna Sui; while at Jeremy Scott, the standout look was a monochrome white dip-dye effect. Makeup artist Romy Soleimani created flashes of neon corals over the eyelids in haphazard swathes at Carolina Herrera; and backstage at Collina Strada, makeup artist Yuka Ishizuka applied tie-dye dabs of pastels across cheekbones and around the eyes.

How to wear it now:
For a soft entry into the world of neons, try a bright liner for the lower and upper eyelids. Yves Klein blues and bold purples will give you a nuanced interpretation of the trend. For hair, opt for temporary sprays, such as L’Oréal Colorista, which will give you a flash of neon pink or blue that you can wash out the following day.

The trend: Back to black

Where we’ve seen it:
Tom Ford, Brandon Maxwell, Longchamp, Proenza Schouler

What you need to know:
Black liner, mascara, cream eyeshadow—it’s all back and with a vengeance. Smoky eyes by makeup artist Diane Kendal at Tom Ford were rich with metallic undertones. At Brandon Maxwell, long Bambi-esque lashes were coated in thick mascara; while Pat McGrath created sultry smudgy eyes at Longchamp with kohl liner generously applied on lower and upper lashlines. At Proenza Schouler, makeup artist Dick Page had thick artful smudged lines drawn around the eye socket, giving the girls a distinctly rebellious ferocity.

How to wear it now:
The takeaway here is, anything goes. Whether you keep it simple with minimal eyes that pop with dramatic lashes, or ramp it up with an avant-garde liner that emulates the bold brushstrokes of a Franz Kline canvas. Application doesn’t need to be intricate or labour-intensive – a ring finger can impart a beautiful sheer smoky finish with the right metallic tone.

The trend: Skin-tone lips

What you need to know:
This pared-back look is all about lip shades that blend into your skin tone. A modern take on the nude lip, liner is set aside in favour of taupe and warm brown hues that deliver a super toned-down finish.

How to wear it now:
To find your perfect tone, take your usual nude lip and go a shade lighter. Remember to make sure your lips are well hydrated because any dryness in texture will show. Use the shade to enhance the shape of the lips without creating an outline.

The trend: Tied up in knots

Where we’ve seen it:
Brandon Maxwell, Dion Lee, Jonathan Simkhai, Ralph Lauren

What you need to know:
NYFW’s runways were awash with every kind of hair knot you can imagine. At Brandon Maxwell, hairstylist Bob Recine created the supersonic chignon, a multi-twist bun that sat low at the base of the neck. At Dion Lee, Eugene Souleiman created a tough-girl, slicked-back silhouette with a tight knot; while Jonathan Simkhai saw Odile Gilbert create an artful, clasp-like finish across the nape of the neck, with hair held firmly in place.

How to wear it now:
Take inspiration from Guido Palau’s low ponytail at Ralph Lauren and wrap a simple strand of hair over where you’ve tied it up.

The trend: Fantasy warriors

Where we’ve seen it:
Tory Burch, Phillip Lim, Collina Strada, Rodarte, Tomo Koizumi, Area, Marc Jacobs

What you need to know:
Indulging in a little escapism, we had warrior princess-inspired long plaits at Tory Burch; at Rodarte there was ethereal pink glitter over eyes and lips; while Pat McGrath created painterly pastel swoops over eye sockets in candy-coloured hues at Tomo Koizumi, which sat beneath Guido Palau’s cropped elfin fringes. At Marc Jacobs, uncharacteristically pared-back makeup gave way to whimsical, soft, almost untouched hair. Feathers were added by milliner Stephen Jones, creating a nuanced, mythical halo to finish the looks.

How to wear it now:
Those blessed with long hair should embrace the trend set at Tory Burch for long plaits – they’re effortless and simultaneously tidy in terms of keeping tresses out of the face. Makeup palettes were distinctly pastel in tone, lending a dream-like quality, so this is the place to really experiment – if you’re feeling bold, go for multiple shades.
