The swine flu situation in the state continues to be extremely worrisome. The state health department said that two more swine flu patients succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Friday, taking the season’s toll to 63.

Health department data showed that 89 new cases were reported on Friday. With these, the total number of swine flu cases in the state since January 1, 2019, touched 1,698. Of these, more than 900 cases have been confirmed in February itself, i.e. an average of 60 per day, as against an average of 23 or so for the month of January.

Of the fresh cases, 40 were confirmed in Ahmedabad city alone. Ahmedabad has reported close to 550 swine flu cases this year, which is more than one-third of the cases in the state.

Anand reported nine cases, while Vadodara city and Sabarkantha reported six cases. Three cases were confirmed in Banaskantha, Ahmedabad district, Mehsana, Patan, and Jamnagar city, and two cases in Rajkot, Junagadh city, and Jamnagar. One case was reported from Surat city, Kutch, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Kheda, Aravalli, and Mahisagar.

The health department said that 1,052 patients have been discharged since January 1, while 582 are under treatment.
