The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing arrested the Assistant Executive Engineer in the Office of Director of Panchayats with the unaccounted cash of ₹ 3.52 lakh.
Sources in the DVAC unit of Kanniyakumari district said the team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mathialagan, went to the Office of Director of Panchayats on the Collectorate premises shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday for a surprise check following specific information it had received.
When they were entering the Collectorate premises, the Assistant Executive Engineer in the Office of Director of Panchayats Madasamy Sundararaj, a resident of Bharani Nagar in Palayamkottai, came out in his car.
Mr. Mathiyalagan intercepted the car and took the official to the Office of Director of Panchayats along with the car. While the team members searched for cash and incriminating documents inside the office, Mr. Mathialagan and his subordinate checked the car thoroughly and seized ₹ 3.52 lakh hidden inside the luxury vehicle.
Since Madasamy Sundararaj could not account for the cash seized, he was riddled with questions based on the information the anti-corruption personnel had received. “The amount seized today is only a day’s collection,” the sources said.
Further investigations are on.
