Chettipalayam to host jallikattu today
tnn | Feb 16, 2019, 23:54 ISTCoimbatore: Municipal administration minister S P Velumani on Saturday inspected the arrangements for the jallikattu to be conducted at Chettipalayam near the L&T bypass here on Sunday.
Organizers said the work on barricades, stage and vaadivaasal has been completed, along with levelling of ground. The event, which will be inaugurated by Velumani, will commence at 7am on Sunday
“More than 500 bulls from different places, including Alanganallur and Madurai, and more than 600 tamers have been registered for the event. Both the bulls and the tamers will be allowed to participate only after conducting health check-ups. Bulls will be subjected to an additional round of medical check-up before allowing them to enter the ground,” said one of the organizers, who didn’t want to be named.
More than 12 ambulances with doctors would be deployed at the venue to take care of tamers who sustain injuries or meet other emergencies. “We have taken all precautionary measures,” the organizer said.
Seating arrangements have also been made at the venue, which is spread across 30 acres. “At least 10,000 people could watch the game at a time and people would be allowed to watch it only for two hours in order to accommodate more number of people,” the organizer said.
It’s for the second consecutive time the bull taming sport is being conducted in the district since the state government passed an ordinance to conduct jallikattu after thousands of people, especially students, held a massive protest across the state in 2017.
