MUMBAI: The Cricket Club of India (CCI), as a mark of protest against the dastardly terrorist attack at Pulwama, blanked out pictures of legendary Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan, who is currently the country's prime minister, on Friday.
Three pictures - one in the restaurant 'The Porbunder All-Rounder', and two elsewhere in the club - have been covered up.
"In our restaurant, we have pictures of all the great all-rounders. Imran was certainly a great all-rounder in his time. But today, the circumstances are different. We are shocked and saddened by what has happened. The fact that there has been no statement from him has been very disappointing. The club has been unanimous and univocal in its stand on this issue," CCI president Premal Udani told TOI on Saturday.
"We are a sports club. Normally, we don't like to mix sports and politics. But there are times that are beyond sports. Imran was a great sportsman, but today, he's the PM of a nation which is in a proxy war with India. All of us are very aggrieved. In a small way, this is like a symbolic protest from us," Udani added.
Suresh Bafna, the cricket secretary at CCI, said he wants the BCCI to act tough too, even if that means India pulling out of its World Cup match against Pakistan in England this summer.
