Chithiram Pesuthadi 2 has nothing to do with the 2006 film that propelled its filmmaker, Mysskin to fame. Perhaps the title was selected to cash in on the popularity of Chithiram Pesuthadi, which is best remembered for initiating the ‘Yellow sari’ item-song culture in Tamil cinema. Google tells me that Chithiram Pesuthadi 2 was shot in 2013, when the old ₹500 notes were still legal. Actress Gayathrie was fresh from the success of Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Radhika Apte was relatively new, and was testing waters in Tamil and Telugu industries, with regrettable films. This was around the same time when West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo (who plays a cameo in the film) was winning the hearts of Tamil fans after his impressive performance in that year’s IPL, much before CSK’s eventual ban. These are some of the harsh facts that suggest how dated Chithiram Pesuthadi 2 and its screenplay look.
- Cast: Vidharth, Radhika Apte, Ajmal, Ashok Kumar, Gayathrie and Nandan Loganathan
- Director: Rajan Madhav
- Storyline: It’s best for the director to explain
There’s no polite way of saying that it is an atrocious film that questions your very nature of existence in this universe. It’s a carelessly-written thriller that aspires to become something else — a wannabe hyperlink cinema. The film is populated by a bunch of characters (Vidharth, Ajmal, Radhika, Gayathrie, Ashok and Nandan) who are desperately looking to make quick money. What happens when their stories overlap, is the simplest way of explaining the scheme of things. Director Rajan Madhav doesn’t seem too content in storytelling. And, not a single scene is allowed to linger. Even if it does, Sajan Madhav’s deafening music does further damage to an already botched film.
Who said Chithiram Pesuthadi 2 is devoid of funny moments? A character is called ‘entertainment’ in a film that’s anything but entertaining. Well, how’s that for irony?
