MOHALI: A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader died after the SUV he was travelling in turned turtle following a tyre burst on Chandigarh-Ambala highway, near Lalru, on Thursday evening. The crash claimed the life of a biker, too, and left two others — the SAD leader’s wife and driver — injured around 4.30pm.
Police said Mohali (urban) district president Baljeet Singh Kumbra, 65, was going to Shahabad, Haryana, to perform the last rites of a relative. While Kumbra was sitting on the passenger seat, his wife — Rajinder Kaur, 64, councillor from ward 46 — was on the rear seat. “The SUV was plying on the highway and the motorcycle on the slip road. Both were going towards Ambala. The SUV’s front, left tyre burst when it reached near a playground in Lalru. As the driver — Tarsem Singh, 53 — lost control of the vehicle, it broke the road divider and overturned on the biker — Sakti Singh, 23, a resident of Ambala,” said a cop.
Passers-by called up an ambulance that took Kumbra, his wife and driver to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The biker, who worked in Chandigarh, was rushed to Derabassi civil hospital, where he was declared brought dead. “While Kumbra succumbed, his wife and driver were referred to a private hospital in Sector 62, Mohali. Their condition is stated to be critical,” said investigating officer Satinder Singh of Lalru police station.
Sukhdev Singh, ward 47 councillor, said, “Kumbra was an honest and hard-working man. He was always ready to help residents.”
Derabassi MLA NK Sharma and other leaders condoled Kumbra’s demise.
