The Haryana State Commission for Women has sought a detailed report into the mass failure of MBBS (final year) students of Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College for Women in Sonipat.
Thirty-one students of the college had failed in the subject of Internal Medicine in December last.
The aggrieved students and their representatives, including parents and guardians, had approached the commission on February 5 on this matter.
Most of these students are academically brilliant and never had to repeat any exam during their entire course.
The institute had shot into fame when one of its alumni Manushi Chillar had won the coveted Miss World-2017 title.
Following the complaints, the commission wrote to Vice-Chancellor Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma, Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (Rohtak) O.P Kalra, seeking constitution of a committee to conduct a probe into the matter.
“Because of this poor and dreadful result, many students have gone under depression. They have developed negative tendencies considering the bleakness of their future aspects within this medical college,” read the letter.
The commission had sought a report in the matter within five working days in view of the supplementary exam likely to be held by the end of this month but the report was not received till Thursday afternoon.
The commission’s chairperson Pratibha Suman told The Hindu that they would write to the V-C’s office if the report was not received till evening.
Ms. Suman also said several students in the case had alleged harassment by the faculty in the wake of the complaint to the Commission.
The college authorities claimed that they had given all details in this regard to the V-C’s office.
The commission, in its eight-page letter, also talked about the alleged indirect pressure on the students and “apparent and rampant” discrimination against them “in the form of caste and creed”.
The commission suggested that the supplementary exam be held under the guidance and directions of the Vice-Chancellor and confidence-building measures be taken since the students and their juniors were depressed. It also recommended holding of gender sensitation programmes, among other things.
