THANE: Three commuters fell off suburban trains in two separate incidents between Kalwa and Diva on Friday. Two others were injured and one of them is critical.
The police said that first incident took place when Naved Sheikh, Imran Shaikh and Pradip Prajapati boarded the 9.30am CST-bound from Mumbra. "One of them reportedly hit a railway pole even before reaching the next station, Kalwa. In an attempt to save himself from falling off the train, he probably held on to his fellow passengers and the three fell off the coach. Naved and Imran were killed on the spot, Prajapati was found in an injured state a few metres away," said an officer. All three are residents of Mumbra.
A relative of Naved told TOI he was on his way to work at Currey Road and had left home around 9.10am as usual. "The spot where he fell off was near his home along Parsik Hills. He was spotted in an injured condition by some passersby who informed his mother," said his cousin.
By the time Naved and Imran could be rushed to the hospital, they had succumbed to their injuries. Naved was the only breadwinner and is survived by his ailing mother. His father passed away recently while his elder brother died in the 2005 July floods.
In another incident, around 2pm, an unidentified passenger who was travelling in a slow Dombivli-bound local was hit by a pole near Diva after he reportedly leaned outside to spit. Officials said he was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition and later succumbed to injuries. A case was yet to be registered with Thane railway police.
