Four teenage girls have been taken to hospital after overdosing on a prescription medication at a high school on the Gold Coast.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics were called to Southport State High School on Smith Street at 8.30am on Friday.

He said the incident was reported as an overdose.

They were taken to the Gold Coast Hospital in a stable condition.
