Minister to inaugurate modern traffic signals
TNN | Feb 16, 2019, 00:43 ISTCoimbatore: Minister for municipal administration, rural development and implementation of special programme SP Velumani will inaugurate the first batch of the modern traffic signals contributed by Uyir, a forum that envisions to create awareness among the public on road safety and safe driving, today evening on Avinashi Road.
The signals will be installed at JM Baker Junction, LIC Junction, GKN Junction, Anna Statue Junction and Lakshmi Mills Junction.
The gadgets that use an advanced software and cameras will adjust the traffic signal timing to maximise the flow of traffic, make it safe for pedestrians to cross roads as well as identify motorists, who are not wearing helmets as well as those who are breaking traffic rules by capturing the number plate details, including location, date and time. The information will be transferred to the police control room.
“This will enable police to penalise the traffic offenders. Repeat offenders risk the chance of licence cancellation, as done in foreign countries,” managing trustee of Uyir S Rajasekaran told TOI. “The measure, to a large extent, will enforce discipline among motorists and go towards reducing traffic accidents.”
Moreover, police officers can monitor the junctions from the control room live.
