Hindu outfits pay homage to victims of serial blasts
TNN | Feb 15, 2019, 00:31 ISTCoimbatore: BJP, Hindu Munnani and several Hindu outfits on Thursday paid homage to the people, who lost their lives in the serial bomb blasts in the city on February 14, 1998.
The blasts, which shook the city and claimed the lives of 51 people, also injured hundreds. BJP, Hindu Munnani, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Hindu outfits used to conduct floral tribute to the victims every year. On Thursday evening, the Hindu outfits conducted a procession at RS Puram and paid floral tribute to those killed in the blasts.
After the event, BJP national secretary H Raja met reporters and said that V Ramalingam of Kumbakonam, a 42-year-old PMK functionary who was murdered on Tuesday, was targeted for opposing religious conversion. The government should bring an anti-conversion act, he said. “The party headquarters will decide about the alliance for the Lok Sabha election. Anti-nationals are leading DMK, not party president MK Stalin. All opposition parties are corrupt,” he said.
The city police arrested 581 members of the outfits, including 24 women, who conducted a procession at RS Puram.
Police had arrested 40 Hindu Makkal Katchi cadres and its president Arjun Sampath for conducting a procession without permission in the morning.
Hindu Bharath Sena members performed obsequies to the victims and tonsured their heads at Perur.
